Certification

Before one can be considered for certification, they must be qualified through a blend of education, training, and experience.  Once qualified, an individual may become certified.  Certification is written documentation of qualification.  An individual is normally certified by their employer.

Recommended Practices for qualification and certification are available from various entities, varying on country and industry sector.  For example, companies performing work in a nuclear power plant may qualify and certify their employees to some particular standard, while companies performing nondestructive testing on commercial airliners may follow other recommended practices.  Similarly, companies performing work in Italy may follow recommended practices provided by The Italian Society of Nondestructive Testing, while companies in England may follow recommended practices provided by The British Institute of Non-destructive Testing.  For the rest of this section, recommended practices provided by The American Society for Nondestructive Testing will be discussed.
